Chinese herbal medicine is the use of animal, mineral and plant materials to affect change in the body. Most people are familiar with Chinese herbs to help prevent a cold (the top two active ingredients in Airborne are Chinese herbs) or for an energy boost (think ginseng), but Chinese herbs are also great for mental health. The prevalence of depression, anxiety and other mental health conditions continues to rise, and Chinese herbs have been proven at least as effective as the current standard of care using western pharmaceuticals and cognitive behavioral therapy, aka talk therapy.
Chinese herbs are particularly good when you have a lot of symptoms with no clear cause, need to treat or want to avoid side effects from pharmaceutical medications, have tried western interventions without success or most importantly, for preventing illness altogether! They are taken daily at home, so they are great for in between appointments for other services like acupuncture, or for people who can’t come into the office. Chinese herbs can be prescribed via telemedicine.
